Special Announcement:  TWO Block of the Month Programs

Quilt Passions will be sponsoring not one but two Block of the Month programs in 2009, and you’re going to love them both!

For our machine or hand appliqué fans, we will be doing a series of 12 Hawaiian Themed blocks with the month name on each which can be finished into a quilt or individual wall hangings.  Each block has been created by our own Annabelle Treacy and will have a charming Island theme. A complete kit for each block, done up in our beautiful fabrics, will be available each month for $12.00.  We will host a complementary workshop for the first two months for assistance in cutting and assembling the block (attendance at the workshop is optional and current block can be purchased any day that month).  Of course you can come in any time with questions.

For our traditional piecers and template fans we will be doing a 12-month quilt called “Many Paths All Around” which features variations on a Drunkard’s path block. These kits will also sell for $12.00; in October 2009 you will received your border and binding fabric.  The same procedures and policies will apply, including the free workshop for the first two months! Again please bring in your questions or concerns.

Design Your Own Class!

Quilt Passions will be happy to design a class to YOUR specifications.  (Chocolate is always in order!)

It’s simple.  Gather 2 friends and yourself who want the same class, a good time of day for all of you and call Karen to schedule it!  We will then find a qualified instructor for your class.  Costs will vary according to prep time and length of class.  Schedule availability will vary between other classes.  Once the class is set, it will be opened to other students.

Karen and her staff are also available for guild or club meetings or workshops. So please stop by or call.

Suggestions:  Girls Night Out, Girl Scouts, home schoolers and birthday parties.

Tip of the Month:   Threading a Needle

1.      Place a piece of white cloth or paper on your lap when threading the needle.  You will be able to see the eye much better.  If you don’t have anything white, a light colored cloth will help.

2.    The thread has a “grain” so it will go through the eye easier in the direction it comes off the spool.

3.    If you are having trouble threading the needle then try the other end of the thread.

4.    If you wet the “eye” of the needle, the thread will go through easier.  It seems to pull the thread through.

Quilt Guilds/Groups

Aloha Quilters of Kona is composed of quilters working in both traditional and Hawaiian styles.  This group meets informally for about 2 hours the THIRD Saturday of each month, except November and December, at ChristChurch, Episcopal (Wallace Hall), on

Konaweana High School Road
in Kealalekua.  The meeting starts at 9:30 a. m.  We share old and new ideas and techniques to promote the art of quilting in the community.  New members and visitors, whether novice quilters or "old hands" are welcome.  Often, there is a demonstration of a new quilting technique held after the regular meeting.  Bring something for “show & tell”.  For more information call Dawn Castelli at 322-7962.

SKEA Fiber Arts meets the SECOND Tuesday of every month, at the SKEA (Society for Kona’s Education & Art), on Hwy 11 in Honaunau.  Time is 10 a. m. to 2 p. m.  Bring a lunch, ideas for projects, show and tell items, something to work on, a sewing machine (with extension cord) if you wish. Be there or be square—or both!   Open to everyone, the cost is a $5.00 per-meeting contribution to SKEA.

For more information call Catherine Wynne at 328-8848 or Annabelle Treacy at 322-0710.

Please call or stop by the shop in advance to register for workshops as we must have a minimum of two paid students by the day before or class will be cancelled.
