Wendy's Flying Geese Binder Cover

Are you ready for a “NO-FAIL” flying geese piecing method? You’ll learn all about piecing these versatile quilt blocks as you make a handy binder cover. You’ll receive Wendy’s free pattern in class. These binder covers make great gifts!

Please bring to class:

• Sewing machine
• Quarter-inch piecing foot – OR – know how to move your needle position for a quarter-inch seam.
• 50-weight piecing thread in a neutral color
• Rotary cutter, small cutting mat
• ANY rulers you may have for flying geese (optional)
• Basic sewing supplies: scissors, pins, seam ripper, chocolate candy, etc.

Fabric Requirements if you are bringing your own:

For Flying Geese blocks (I cut mine from various scraps.)

Background Fabric (Green) See note below!
26 squares @ 2 3/4”
4 squares @ 4 1/4”

Geese Fabric (Purple)
7 squares @ 4 1/2”
1 square @ 7 1/2” or 4 scraps about 4” x 71/2”
( I used 4 different scrap fabrics here.)

Top and Bottom borders (mostly green print)
2 strips @ 3” x 211/2”

Side/Inside Panels (can be same as top and bottom borders)
2 rectangles @ 9 1/2” x 11”

Lining (can be anything; will not show)
1 piece at least 10” wide x width of fabric, 40” to 42”

Optional: Light-weight fusible interfacing about 22” x 10”

NOTE: The cutting sizes for the Flying Geese
blocks are oversize to allow for squaring up.
None of the Background (green) squares
need to be exact 2 3/4” or 4 1/4” squares! A little
variation is okay. You can cut them quickly
from scraps.

DESIGN IDEAS:
You do not need to make 30 Flying Geese blocks if you don’t want to. Think of replacing some of them with plain squares or rectangles of a beautiful fabric, or even other pieced blocks that finish 3” square (measure 31/2”). Choose your favorite color scheme, but make sure there is an obvious difference in VALUE (how dark or how light) between the Geese fabrics and the Background fabrics.

Your Border and Side Panel fabrics can blend into your Backgrounds, or they can be contrasting, as in the purple and orange example below.
