Finishing Your Quilt Top: Randomly Pieced (RPB) and Randomly Appliqued (RAB) with Grace Errea (MV)

Skill Level: All Levels

Description:

Have you ever struggled trying to find just the right background fabric for your wonderful future quilt? Sometimes the colors, values, and textures are just not working. You visited every store in the neighborhood and still nothing!

In this class we will demonstrate how to create Grace's Randomly Pieced backgrounds and also Randomly Appliqued backgrounds.

We will discuss fabric selection for backgrounds that are dynamic and showcase the focal point. We will also discuss how to mix the fabrics so that they create a smooth, flawless background for a quilt.

We will show you how to change value and colors smoothly, how to plan your color/value scheme so that the background works compatibly with the focal point(s) that will be attached to it.

The RPB is a piecing process, but the key here is that the shapes are placed and stitched randomly so not only you will control the look of your background but you will also have ease of piecing, as there are NO points that meet in this pieced background unlike some controlled pieced stitching.

Kit Contents: ($15-optional)

Fabric – The teacher will choose at least 6 fat quarters of tone-on-tone fabrics that blend well together in value for you to practice the technique. Email teacher (gracerrea@gmail.com) before the class to ensure I know to bring this for you.

You will NOT have to bring this then yourself and will have the perfect blend for a background.

Supplies:

  • Fabric - Choose at least 5-6 fat quarters of tone-on-tone fabrics that blend well together in value. Bring any fat quarters for the practice even if they do not blend together. We will have a discussion on best fabrics to use

  • Fabric scissors

  • You will need your sewing machine with a ¼ foot and thread.  Pre-fill your bobbin so as to save time in class.
  • Ruler 24”, if you have a quilters ruler bring that. The larger the better.
  • Square type ruler.  I use a 12” square but smaller will work too.
  • Rotary cutter and rotary cutting board.
  • Pins
  • Thread - 50wt cotton in a medium beige or gray color
  • You will need sheets of paper 12"x 12" to draw the pattern for your design. Regular 8 1/2 x 11 pages will do fine but bring scotch tape or masking tape to take pages together for size needed.
