CLASS0002: One Block Wonder with Anna Ahmed (MV)

One Block Wonder is a simple technique using one fabric or panel to create amazing kaleidoscope hexigon blocks that fit together in a mesmerizing pattern, with NO Y seams! This technique is quite addictive and after you take this class you may find yourself looking at fabric differently.

The class is held over 2 sessions, 1 week apart. Day 1 of class will teach you how to stack your fabric, cut it properly and start to sew your hexagon blocks. Day 2 will be a sewing and design class. We will sew the half hexagon blocks and begin designing them into your beautiful masterpiece of a quilt. Homework may be required if the cutting was not completed on Day 1.

Required supplies (to be supplied by student):

  1. Fabric: One continuous cut of fabric to include 6 repeats of the screened image. Standard repeat is 24 inches, meaning 6 repeats will be 4 yards. Your fabric should have large print motifs with a background visible or a panel image. If using a panel, you will need 7 panels (6 will be cut for hexagons and 1 left for either the back or to incorporate into the front)
  • Option 1: Wall hanging approximately 35" x 35" (size will depend on the size of your strips - don't worry, we will cover that in class)

    • Focus fabric - 4 yards
    • Inner border - 1/4 yard
  • Option 2: Lap quilt approximately 50" x 70"

    • Focus fabric - 5 yards
    • Inner border - 1/2 yard
  • Option 3: Panel, this can be as large as you want

2. Sewing machine (please have a working knowledge of your machine)

3. 1/4 inch foot for your machine (I personally use a 1/4 inch foot with a guide and love it)

4. Thread and bobbins (very thin thread is best to reduce bulk such as Wonderfil Decobob 80wt. polyester)

5. Scissors or thread snips

6. Rotary cutter with new blade

7. Standard 24 inch cutting ruler (cutting mats are already in classroom)

8. Flat head pins, a.k.a. flower head pins

9. 60° triangle ruler - please buy this from your local quilt shop, Amazon (no brand rulers) might save you money but they may not actually be 60°
