Free Motion Quilting with Carrie Olsen (MV)
Join Carrie and learn the basics of free-motion quilting on your domestic sewing machine. We will discuss choosing thread, batting, and needles to stitching on your quilt top. Carrie will guide you through a variety of designs, such as stippling, loops, flames, pebbles, bricks, as well as a quilting on appliques. Learn free motion fundamentals to create beautiful quilts while having free-motion fun!

Required supplies (to be supplied by student):
- Book: Beginner's Guide to Free-Motion Quilting by Natalia Bonner
- Fabric: Solid or tone-on-tone that reads as a solid
- Top: 2/3 yard
- Backing: 2/3 yard
- Appliqué: Fat quarter of large flower fabric
- Batting: 2/3 yard Warm and Natural
- Fusible web
- Thread that contrasts with fabric color: 40 wt polyester (I use Isacord) or 50 wt Cotton
- Free-motion quilting foot (open toe or clear plastic works the best)
- Needles: Topstitch or Microtex 80/12
- Pilot Frixion pen
- 6" x 12" ruler
- Sewing machine (please have a working knowledge of your sewing machine), plus extra bobbins, needles, & manual)
- Basic quilting supplies: rotary cutter, ruler, cutting mat
- Basic sewing supplies: scissors, thread, seam ripper, etc.
- Extension table
- Quilting gloves
Pre-Class Preparation:
- Cut (6) 12" x 12" squares from top and backing fabrics and batting.
- On one square on the top fabric, fuse a slower in the middle of the square with fusible web.
- Make 6 quilt sandwiches:
- Layer one top fabric, batting, and backing fabric to make one sandwich. Do not baste with pins or adhesive.
